Conquering Imposter Syndrome: A Coach’s Journey to Confidence

What it is, why you have it and how to move past it

Do you sometimes feel like you don’t deserve to be a coach or healer, that you’re not good enough or qualified enough to help others? If so, you’re not alone. Many coaches and healers struggle with imposter syndrome, a feeling of being a fraud despite their expertise and experience.

I remember my first corporate coaching client. I had prepared extensively, curated an awesome session, and was excited to work with such an prominent individual. But as the session approached, a wave of self-doubt hit me.

"Who am I to be giving advice?" I thought. "What if they realize I don’t know as much as they think?" Despite my training and experience, I felt like a fraud.

During our first meeting, my client, an accomplished executive, shared their struggles and looked to me for guidance. My inner critic screamed, "You’re not qualified to help them!"

But as we delved deeper into the session and he went through a Breathwork experience, I saw genuine progress and deep peace and clarity in my client’s eyes. He left the session with a renewed sense of direction. It was then despite my internal doubts, I realized the value I brought was real.

That experience taught me that imposter syndrome is just a barrier of self-doubt. By pushing through it, I am able to help numerous people and, in turn, validate my own purpose as a coach.

In this post, I want to share with you several practical ways that coaches and entrepreneurs can overcome imposter syndrome and embrace their skills and abilities. It’s time to release self-doubt and start serving the world as the capable and confident coaches and healers that you are meant to be.

What is Imposter Syndrome & How Does it Affect Us?

Imposter Syndrome is that persistent voice in our heads that tells us we’re not good enough, that we can’t do it, and that everyone else is doing it better.

This feeling arises from a deep-rooted feeling of unworthiness, a small part of ourselves that questions whether we truly deserve success. For coaches, this can severely hinder our ability to effectively support our clients and prevent us from realizing our full potential.

It's important to remember that imposter syndrome is just one aspect of us, not our entire identity. It's a false perception that we can overcome once we see it for what it truly is.

If you're reading this, you’ve probably faced imposter syndrome before or might be dealing with it now. But don’t worry. In the following sections, we’ll explore practical strategies to conquer imposter syndrome and fully embrace your talents as a coach or entrepreneur.

Recognizing the Signs

Imposter Syndrome can be elusive. Initially, it may evade detection, but its presence becomes evident when you feel like a fraud despite your expertise.

Here are several telltale signs:

Feeling Stuck

One of the most common signs of imposter syndrome is experiencing a sense of feeling stuck – or like not knowing what to do next. This may manifest as a paralyzing fear of failure or anxiety regarding how others see us. Additionally, it might result in an inability to take action, despite knowing the necessary actions to move forward.

A Sense of Heaviness

Individuals struggling with imposter syndrome often encounter a heavy burden in relation to their work. This sensation can feel like their body and energy levels are sinking into a state of despondency. They might experience feelings of being overwhelmed or overworked, despite not necessarily undertaking any additional tasks.

Anxiety and Negative Self-Talk

How frequently and effortlessly we slip into negative self-talk! Anxiety and negative self-talk are common symptoms of imposter syndrome. These may include thoughts such as "I’m not good enough," "I’m not capable," or "It’s all been done before," all of which can severely impact one’s self-esteem and hinder creativity.

Internal Emotional Turmoil

The emotional landscape of imposter syndrome can often feel chaotic and negative. This may result in a sensation of feeling "immobilized" or “stuck" within a cycle of fear, self-doubt, and comparison.

Beating Ourselves Up

Finally, imposter syndrome can take the form of beating ourselves up. We push away the creative part of us, the loving part of us, and the part of us that wants just to express ourselves. This can result in a fear of trying new things and taking risks, which can harm personal and professional growth. Lastly, imposter syndrome might manifest as self-criticism and playing it safe. We tend to silence our creativity, our passion and our urge to express ourselves fully. This fear of venturing into new territories and taking risks can hinder both personal and professional development.

Can I overcome Imposter Syndrome?

Absolutely! I know what it is to struggle with imposter syndrome. That nagging inner voice that questions whether I'm good enough or if others are more qualified. It stems from a part of me that doubts my worth. Initially, it felt like an integral aspect of myself until I realized it's merely an illusion. It doesn't define who I truly am.

However, that doesn't mean the feelings of inadequacy disappear. When my clients ask if I've ever dealt with imposter syndrome, I always answer honestly: I still experience it at times. I don’t believe it ever completely vanishes.

Yet, I've learned not to ignore it or push it away. Instead, I've learned to navigate it. When a new idea emerges or I pursue a new endeavor, I expect those feelings of doubt and unworthiness to surface. However, I recognize that these feelings are simply attempting to limit me. They don't define or who I am.

Here are some practices that have helped me overcome that nagging inner voice:

Practices for Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

 1) Breathwork for Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Breathwork is a powerful tool for releasing the pressures we put on ourselves. Breathing consciously helps us move energy through our body, calming our minds. This can help us to make room for our highest self to emerge.

2) Movement for Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Here's how you can transform your energy through movement and dance:

1. Stand up and let your body move freely. Shake, dance, or engage in any activity that ignites you.

2. Play a song that uplifts you, such as “Happy” by Pharell or “Staying Alive” by the Beegees (these are my personal faves!)

3. While dancing, utilize your breath to release any stagnant energy. Visualize this energy transforming into a vibrant, divine force within you .Movement can help break down the stagnant energy.

3) Journaling

Journaling is a wonderful tool for shifting our perspective and manifesting. It allows us to recognize our achievements, celebrate ourselves, and prioritize your self.

Here are some friendly journaling exercises to help overcome imposter syndrome:

1. Write down your vision as if it’s already happened– visualize your future successes, whether it's completing a creative project, attracting new clients, or reaching a financial milestone in your business. Feel the energy of it being already achieved.

2. Write a letter from your future self to your current self, acknowledging all the accomplishments you've achieved. Embrace the feeling of already having succeeded.

3. Reflect and celebrate your wins, no matter how small or big they may seem. List down the epic moments that showcase how far you've come.

4. Take a moment to thank yourself and acknowledge what you love about yourself. It could be as simple as completing a new piece of art or sharing something meaningful on social media. Celebrating your successes creates momentum and helps combat imposter syndrome.

Finally, here are a few bonus tips for overcoming Imposter Syndrome:

  • Create a supportive system– surround yourself with like-minded people who can give you reflections. Reach out and connect with coaches and healers who understand the struggle and can help remind you of your greatness.

  • Celebrate your achievements – no matter how small they may seem. Take time to recognize the wins and honor who you are becoming!

  • Practice trusting yourself – lean into the moments of uncertainty and discomfort. You have the strength and resilience to overcome imposter syndrome, so keep going no matter what!

Imposter syndrome can seem overwhelming and hold you back, but with a few simple strategies, you can begin to conquer it and acknowledge your awesomeness!

By recognizing imposter syndrome and having faith in yourself, you'll be well on your way to achieving your dreams. So don’t let fear or self-doubt hold you back – you're so worthy of greatness! Use these tools and practices to help yourself overcome imposter syndrome and embrace a life filled with joy, creativity, and success.
