Breathe Together: Elevating Date Night with Breathwork

Get ready to fall in love with your new date night: Breathwork with your partner.

In my experience, I’ve discovered that Breathwork has this incredible power to enhance relationships, making you and your partner more aware of your connection, actions, behaviors, wants, and needs. Meditation can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming, especially with our busy lives and short attention spans. But Breathwork adds a dynamic and approachable element, making it easier to focus and less intimidating. It’s like a breath of fresh air for your relationship journey.

If you’re unfamiliar with Breathwork, let me explain how it works. By following a tri-active breathing pattern you are increasing the oxygen in your body as well as activating your parasympathetic nervous system which is connected to your diaphragm. This results in people having physical and even emotional sensations during a session. Some of those sensations include tingling in the extremities, tightening in the face and hands, temperature changes, and emotions such as joy or release can arise. After the turbo breathing part, we ease into a slow meditative breath, and people often report feeling relaxed, more joyful, and more connected.

Also, another note about the physical sensations from breathwork, sometimes people get the feeling of being high after a session. No, you didn’t accidentally ingest anything; it’s just your body responding to the breathing pattern. There have been studies done by the Multidisciplinary Association For Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) regarding the physical and emotional experience of breathwork and how in certain environments it can produce a similar experience to psychedelics. But the fascinating part is you are just using your breath.

Overall, breathwork is a profound experience, some call it magical, many call it life-changing. Even if you aren’t into the spiritual aspect of it you can connect with the physical and emotional— which is why it makes a great date night.

Here are some of the top reasons to experience breathwork with your partner:

First, it’s a new experience, especially if you haven’t tried it on your own or with your partner before. It adds a refreshing twist to your usual date night routine, and there’s nothing quite like exploring new activities together to spark excitement in a relationship, especially when it ventures beyond your comfort zone.

Second, it’s a chance to forge a connection with both yourself and your partner. Beyond the novelty of the experience, the nature of this practice — both physical and emotional — naturally fosters connection on a deeper level. Breathwork is tailored for surrendering and releasing emotions, making it particularly beneficial for managing stress, anxiety, fear, and more. Fundamentally, it’s a practice rooted in vulnerability. Sharing this experience with your partner creates an opportunity for both of you to embrace vulnerability, thereby deepening intimacy. Additionally, feelings may come up that you have yet to deal with which can initiate open and honest dialogue. Or maybe you just simply learn something new about yourself during the process that you can share with your partner.

It’s a meditation practice that men, who are resistant to normal meditation, can get into. As a woman who facilitates breathwork, I’ve observed that it can be a bit challenging for men to embrace the concept of meditation or self-connection. Of course, I’m not saying this is true for all men, I’m just speaking here from my personal experience. When I do have the chance to guide a breathwork session with a man, I’m thrilled by the positive reactions. There’s just something about the work of the breathing routine and the tangible physical responses that seems to make it more approachable for them.

Last, and not least important, breathwork has been known to increase your sex drive. This is said to be due to a number of reasons, but most likely attributable to the decrease in stress and anxiety that follow a breathwork session. It is true that a lot of people experience a low sex drive from pressure and anxiety from everyday life. With breathwork being such an intense stress relief, it helps facilitate the return of your

I believe what you get out of every experience is based off of what you put in, and if you put in the energy for breathwork with your partner, you will have a profound and connected experience. At the very least, it will take the stress out of the equation so that you and your partner can better enjoy your time together.

*Quick note, during Covid, a lot of breathwork sessions moved to a virtual setting. That being said virtual breathwork from the comfort of your own home is still a profound experience. Furthermore, virtual sessions have made the practice that much more available. First, it opens up accessibility to breathwork facilitators that may not be local. Second, it enables you (and your partner) to experience it for the first time from a safe space. And if you are uncomfortable trying this experience in a group setting you can definitely try it for the first time virtually from a place you feel safe and supported.

As such, breathwork (especially virtual breathwork) is definitely an option to explore for your next date night.

Happy breathing.
